View Full Version : As I mature...

I've learned that you cannot make someone love you. All you can do is stalk them and hope they panic and give in.
I've learned that no matter how much I care, some people are just born cranky.
I've learned that it takes years to build up trust, and it only takes suspicion, not proof, to destroy it.
I've learned that you can get by on charm for about fifteen minutes. After that, you'd better have a big weenie or huge boobs.
I've learned that you shouldn't compare yourself to others - they are more screwed up than you think.
I've learned that you can keep puking long after you think you're finished.
I've learned that we are responsible for what we do, unless we are celebrities.
I've learned that regardless of how hot and steamy a relationship is at first, the passion fades, and there had better be a lot of money to take its place.
I've learned that the people you care most about in life are taken from you too soon and all the less important ones just never go away.

I've learned that EXXON used to be ENCO after it was ESSO, which was a name invented by a marketing agency who felt that simply putting up signs that read "SO" - which stood for Standard Oil - wouldn't work, although British Petroleum's "BP" works fine. What I've not learned is why, when Sinclair became/merged with BP, they scrapped the signature green dinosaur.
I've also learned that everything I've learned to this point is pretty much meaningless.

So that's what happened to Sinclair and the dino. I guess no company wants to be thought of as a dinosaur, even if their products are dinolicious. I remember that ESSO's slogan used to be "Happy Motoring". As a kid, I never understood what that meant, as (at least in the US) "motor" is seldom used as a verb.

So that's what became of the green dinosaur. What was the one that gave out the double horseshoe stickers?
that I'll never know as much as I think I do.
someone else always has a better witticism in their signature.
faking it is almost as good as being able to do it, and almost impossible to discern from a distance.
there's always someone better than you at whatever you can think of.
that person almost always reminds you of yourself in some detestable way.
the best way of telling my family I love them is to write it on a birthday card or Christmas card, but never in conversation.
I have nothing in common with my sister except our parents.
qualifications are all they're cracked up to be.
pretending to be happy can actually help to make you genuinely happy.
you go nowhere when you die.
Loads more, but nothing I can eloquently summarise here.

There's another think I've learned. Just today.
What was the one that gave out the double horseshoe stickers?
I don't recall the double horseshoe stickers, but I have memories of the orange styrofoam balls SUNOCO (a.k.a., Sun Oil Company) passed out to stick on the car antenna. The balls were so popular that ARCO (a.k.a., Atlantic Ritchfield Company, then MOBIL) followed suit with red balls.
I also remember the EXXON tiger tails - put a tiger in your tank. I had one tied to my bicycle seat.

Oooh, I remember those - they were all the rage back then. If you didn't have one on your bike or the antenna of your mom's car you weren't considered cool, or whatever that used to be to an 8 year old.
I also remember the Hess mini gas trucks - they were cool, too, when they first came out.

I read your post and was sad.
Honest, it ain't always that bad.
There's the odd jock who's not a cad.
There's the odd antagonist who's not mad.
And there's the odd love.
And you don't always see it coming.

I wonder if my 15 minutes are up? Actually it is more like 15 years therefore I must have a big weenie (gazing down at my lack of cleavage) woohoo. Now I can ignore all the spam offering enlargement.

It is soooo tempting to comment. But I won't. I will control my auto-crude impulses. I will! I WILL!!

That no matter how old I get, my mother will insist on trying to tell me how to drive when I take her places. I have a new respect in my step-father for not making her walk home more often.
The closer I get to forty the younger it seems.
That I only get to raise my children once--and that window in time is relatively small. My oldest was only ten when I joined the pffa and his greatest loves in life were soccer and his dog. He's thirteen now--- suddenly he likes girls more than soccer and the dog is starting to look worried.
Don't put off experiencing joy. Picnics, skinny dipping, and watching sunsets are important to one's mental health.
