Hi folks,

By now you’ve likely noticed the new ad banner at the top of every page. This foray into the commercial realm is necessary, I’m afraid, as the PFFA is now independently financed and additional steps need to be taken beyond the user subscriptions (many thanks to those of you who have contributed) to ensure that bandwidth and hosting charges can be safely covered. We’ve decided to go with Google’s keyword ads, as they tend to be most contextually pertinent and generally least obtrusive. Placement of these ads also helps ensure that a greater number of PFFA threads become available in Google’s search indices. The text ads are chosen by Google based on the textual information presented within any specific forum posting. We have no control over which ads are displayed, but can filter out unwanted advertisers. If you happen to spot a particularly misleading or ethically questionable ad, please let me know, and I will ensure that the domain is removed from the ad sequence.

If you find the ads overly irritating, feel free to rant in this thread. Otherwise, don’t hesitate to click an ad once in a while to help line the site owner’s fraying pockets and ensure the fiscal sustainability of the PFFA.

Many thanks,

Béla

Hit the site about half an hour ago & am just now recovering from a forced download of something called "My Way" speedbar & 72 other objects / files / registry modifications & assorted other garbage. It all made it past my McAffee firewall & my current Ad-aware pop-up stopper (got another new one to go on top after this event).

*rats - could a moderator move this post to Bela's topic? I thought I was in it & was replying. If not, that's what this is about.*

We try to make sure that nothing like that ever gets served through our ad networks - anything that tries to make a user download something is automatically excluded. This was probably one of those nasty resident thingies, which could come from just about anywhere - they're very sneaky about disguising their real point of origin. Of course, it's possible one of those things slipped through from here, if, for example, it was incorrectly identified in the ad networks' databases, but I just ran a check of all the networks and didn't see anthing that should have that effect. If it somehow did come from here, please accept my sincerest apologies.

Here is a link to some info on "My Way" Speedbar.

My Way (http://www.scumware.com/apps/scumware.php/action::view_article/article_id::1063294991/topic::Scumware,-Spyware,-Adware-&-Malware-Applications/)

There is also a review of My Way on PC Mag's web-site, which is actually quite positive, something I did not expect.

Andrea, you should probably check your browser settings. Do you require a prompt before downloads? You cannot (unfortunately) rely on your pop-up stopper to stop everything.

If it is installed using an ActiveX control, for example, you can require that the system prompt you before installing signed controls, and you can block unsigned controls unconditionally.

You can also disable Java etc. (Assuming you are using IE, this would all be done through Tools/ Internet Options / Security / Custom Settings, or find a security level that has these attributes.)
