I went to the home page and clicked on one of the archives, (baewolf to be exact) and suddenly a pop up appeared saying I had 7 new messages! I wasn't stupid enough to click on it, but I think it's disgraceful that they are allowed to basically walk over the great poets' graves, so to speak. Can anything be done about that? I know the mods need donations to help, but I have $0 at the mo for me, let alone anyone else! (Sorry, guys, future bank bals may help!) Doesn't help now though, does it?:(

I haven't encountered any pop-ups on this forum for a very long time, but I do know that elsewhere on the site, there are some pop-ups, which may include the poet archives. It's possible it came from the site itself, but it's also possible you have adware/spyware on your computer somewhere. I would suggest, if you don't have the free software installed already, you download Ad-Aware (http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/) and/or SpyBot (http://www.safer-networking.org/index.php?lang=en&page=download). See if either/both programs find anything on your computer that could be doing it. You may also want to look into getting a pop-up killer of some kind. I believe that Google (www.google.com) has an internet toolbar you can install that includes a pop-up killer. If you have antivirus software, some have the option of turning on a pop-up killer function as well.

Unfortunately, with the Google pop-up blocker on, my Merriam-Webster online dictionary, which 'pops-up' in a separate browser, can't work. Each time I want to use the dictionary, I have to enable site popups. I don't know if my Norton has any pop-up killer function. I tried to check just now but my unstable Window ME which has been causing me much problems lately, won't let me open or close my Norton popup properly.

Hi Rachel,
I actually read up on the spyware programs and such two nights ago, and maybe I have this wrong, or maybe they're sneaky enough to put a . in front (can't really remember) but I heard spybot was a suspected carrier. I downloaded a virus scanner last night ( zero...phew!) and I'm in the process of installing software as well. Money's a bit tight at the mo, so I'll take what I can get, but I don't want to take the first free download that comes along! Are you sure they're OK?
Thanks & cheers,
Cindi :)

Hey Rachel,
Well, I just started downloading Search & Destroy w. Spybot. If you're having no problems with it then I'll give it a go! 34% at the moment. Couldn't be any worse than pop ups anyway, could it? You're supposed to say no to that!
Thanks heaps!:D

Laicie, I've never heard that SpyBot was a carrier of any virus or spyware -- it certainly would be ironic if it were true. I have both Ad-Aware and SpyBot for a "double whammy" effect (SpyBot will let you know with a message window that Ad-Aware will sometimes be incompatible with SpyBot, but I've had no problems).
Autumn, I have an antivirus software offered with my highspeed internet account, and it includes a pop-up killer that allows you to exclude certain domains from pop-up kills. It's called "Freedom". There are a number of pop-up killers that have that exclusion option, so you might want to do a search and check some out.

That's great. I'll do that. Thanks, Rachel.

Hi,
The resident techie for our computer club tells us we need Ad-Aware and Spybot both installed to get'em all.
If you want to see pop-ups, try logging on to the Pink Palace!!!!!

1) To allow a pop-up to pop up in spite of the Google blocker, hold "Ctrl" when you click the link to it.
2) Ad-aware is free.
3) For true pop-up - free luxury, use the Safari web-browser that comes with Mac OS X. It really does block all the pop-up ads you don't want and allow all the pop-up windows you do want, every time perfectly and all automatically.
