I heard a quote recently that was attributed to a german poet. I've been told that it might be from Rainer Maria Rilke.

This is the quote:

A person isn't who they are during the last conversation you had with them - they're who they've been throughout your whole relationship.

Does anyone recognize it? If so, do you know which work it's from?

Thanks for any suggestions,
Andy

Yes, Rilke. The rest of the work you must do yourself, happy journey.

There's an idea of this kind in the last two strophes of the Third Duino Elegy (though googling doesn't turn it up in German - translation here (http://www.dead.net/RobertHunterArchive/files/Poetry/Elegies/elegy3.html), but it doesn't match the words you've given. Maybe it's from one of his letters? Regards / Dunc
