probably a stupid question re limbo

I know that this is probably a very stupid question ( I am a non-too-bright computer illiterate), but could someone please explain (preferably in very simple words, or even monosyllables) why the number of posts is static from God-knows-when.
Years ago in my mis-spent youth I played Estelle in the NYT version of Sartre's Huis Clos, and later in Paris when I was older but not much wiser also Ines. Somehow I feel as though I'm going through limbo or the antecamera of Hell another time.
Any explanations?

My post rating just changed form 379 to 380 - on all my recent posts.

All posts by any one individual reflect the total number of posts; when a new post is entered, the number on all existing posts changes. The same thing happens if you change your signature line; all posts show the new sig.
