When I took English GCSE, many moons ago (well, not that many, but long enough), we were not taught how the language is constructed. At the rip old age of almost twenty eight, I still can't tell my verbs from my adjectives.
I speak well and have an impressively large vocabulary, but I do not know how my native tongue is shaped.
If you could recommend ONLY ONE piece of 'required reading' on the subject, what would it be?
I want to become a better person, as well as a better poet, and understand the English Language better, and woudl seriously appreciate any help given.
Yours in advance, and with great hope,
Xx Kiera Xx

Hey CofL--Why don't you do a search for internet sites related to grammar? For example, I typed in English grammar and came up with over a million hits. Look here (http://www.dailygrammar.com/archive.shtml) or here (http://www.ccc.commnet.edu/grammar/), or type it in yourself and look around for something that suits you.
Good luck.

One of the classic, and most readable, books on the subject of grammar and style is The Elements of Style by Strunk and White.

The internet is at your fingertips, free, and easily cross referenced. I think you'll find the nature of web sites, combined with your skill level, will allow you more control when deciding what information you need versus that which is redundant.
Hoorah for improvment!
*edit* it's like improvement, only for the theatre. sorry.
ill.
