Sharon Olds' Orifices & The Inculcation Of Tedium

I’ll come back to Old’s orifices in a moment. First, I’d like to recommend this site to other newbies. There are forums where you can post and critique poems, but from what I saw, they’re a waste of time. What I do recommend is the articles. A series called “The Art of Writing Poetry” is good additional reading to the “Blurbs of Wisdom” we have here.

The following is from an article called, What The Hell Is Poetry?

“So I'll repeat: poetry is NOT (primarily) a means of self-expression. And to the small extent that it is, a poet's self-expression is usually reserved for how a poem is written (back to technique) and is not the basis for a poem itself. You can't avoid self-expression, but it should be a necessary symptom of writing, not a goal.”

Even those who have already learnt to avoid cliches and abstractions and the like might find some useful tips on line-breaks, how to kick-start a poem, the basic “shape” of poems etc. The site also has a poetry archive of 6000+.

Oh, and there are a few articles on poets: Mary Oliver and Sharon Old’s to name two.

Mods, while I’m here I’ll take the opportunity to thank you. PFFA is the only site I’ve seen that has graded forums. It makes it possible for newbies to post at the same site as the very experienced without mayhem. It is a great place for anyone seriously interested in poetry. Every time I visit “Outside” or see another new poster who didn’t bother to read the “Posting Guidelines”, I count my blessings that you around to keep this place in order. Thanks.

Erato has them as well, though it's a looser construct over there.

I like going to Plagiarist and hit "Random Poem" a couple of times. It's a neat little anthology-making device.

Stay hellaway from the forums, though.
